Emtricitabine is a medicine that is used in the treatment of HIV infection in combination with other drugs. Emtricitabine belongs to a group of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by lowering HIV levels in the bloodstream. Despite the fact that emtricitabine does not prevent HIV, it may reduce your risk of acquiring AIDS and HIV-related diseases such as severe conditions or cancer. These drugs, together with safer sex practices and other lifestyle modifications, may reduce the risk of spreading (spreading) the HIV virus to others.
