Lamivudine, nevirapine, and stavudine tablets are frequently used to treat HIV infection and AIDS. A nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), lamivudine prevents the conversion of viral RNA into viral DNA by selectively blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme. This prevents viral reproduction. Nevirapine, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), binds to the reverse transcriptase enzyme and modifies its structure, limiting its activity and preventing the reproduction of viral particles. Another NRTI, stavudine, is intracellularly phosphorylated and competes with natural nucleotides to stop the chain of viral DNA synthesis. Together, these drugs inhibit HIV replication and slow the spread of the illness. They do, however, have certain adverse effects, including as gastrointestinal problems, haematological abnormalities such anaemia and neutropenia, hepatotoxicity, hypersensitivity reactions, and skin rashes.
