What are HIV drugs and how do they work?

HIV drugs help you to reduce your viral load. These drugs are not the cure for HIV.  HIV drugs help you to reduce your viral load so that you reduce the chance of passing the virus to your partner. This drug improves the function of your immune system.

The seven HIV drug classes are:

1. Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs)

The class of drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) work by binding to and obstructing the action of HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme used by the virus to convert its RNA into DNA through reverse transcription. This mechanism of blocking reverse transcription ultimately thwarts HIV from reproducing, thus playing an important role in HIV treatment.

2. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)

NRTIs, also known as nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors, was the first antiretroviral drugs to gain FDA approval. These drugs function as prodrugs and necessitate being transported into the host cell where they are subsequently phosphorylated to become active. Upon entry into the host cell, the drug is activated through cellular kinases.

3. Protease inhibitors (PIs)

Antiretroviral protease inhibitors are effective in combating HIV by binding to the catalytic site of the HIV protease, which in turn inhibits the cleavage of viral polyprotein precursors into mature and functional proteins that are crucial for viral replication. This interference impedes the virus from reproducing and spreading further.

4. Fusion inhibitors.

Fusion inhibitors work by disrupting the entry of HIV into target cells, with maraviroc binding to the chemokine receptor (CCR) type 5 receptor present on CD4 Th cells. On the other hand, integrase inhibitors, such as raltegravir, function by preventing the viral integrase enzyme from inserting the DNA copy of the viral genome into the host-cell chromosome. This mechanism of action effectively impedes the replication and propagation of the virus.

5.CCR5 antagonists.

CCR5 receptor antagonists are a group of small molecules that act by blocking the CCR5 receptor. The CCR5 receptor, a chemokine receptor with a C-C motif, plays a critical role in the mechanism by which HIV, the causative agent of AIDS, enters into host cells. By inhibiting the function of the CCR5 receptor, CCR5 receptor antagonists can impede the entry of the virus into the cells, which is an essential step in the replication and spread of HIV.

6.Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs)

7. Post-attachment inhibitors.
